Self Evaluation
When starting this project, I had no idea what I wanted to
do. I kept trying to figure something out when my teacher, Mrs. Tranel, helped
me with some ideas. That's when I decided to do my project on making a computer
game. I chose this as my project as I have a very big interest in gaming. Due
to this interest, I've always wanted to make a fun game which people would like
to play. Having some back ground in making games also helped me come up with
the project idea. In my project proposal, I set a couple goals which I was
supposed to meet. My goals were to make a fun and interesting game and learn
more about making games. I feel I have met these goals and did just a little
more.
The one thing I did not expect to do is to make a prominent connection to someone in the gaming industry today, which I did. I also feel my project turned out to be a great final project, even if the game was not the high quality. This is mainly because it took me such a long time to just work on a single part of a game, which turned out to be fun. There were many changes which I needed to do along the way, but without needed changes I learned I should have added them in prior to my playtest session.
My greatest strengths of my final project are the facts that it was something which I made myself. Doing this project has helped me understand more about games in general. My project could have been improved by a few things. The first being more time working on the actual project and not studying how to use unity again, especially after a few updates. If I had more time to work on it, the game would probably have been a much better produced game. Secondly, I could have had more content inside of the game. The content could have been things such as, more diversified enemies, power-ups for the ship, enemy waves that lead to a single boss at the end of the level. If I had to do my project over again and make all these changes, I would.
When I was doing my final project, I had to research a few things in order to finish the game and the project as a whole. This research allowed me to make changes to the games script, the part that makes it run, as well as the enemies, the style of game and how the game is supposed to play. I applied all this research to the game to make it run. As stated before, I researched how to change script as well as write script where it was needed. This allowed me to make the controls for the game, the enemy AI (Artificial Intelligence), the speed of the enemies and the player’s ship and even how and where enemies spawned. The enemies were harder to research as I had to research the style of game and how the game is supposed to play at the same time to find how they worked. I think that more research on the style of game, the enemies and how the game is supposed to be played would have helped me in the long run.
I had a few challenges when making my project. Though they were easy to overcome just by watching a few tutorial videos or even reading a book on video games. But there was one challenge that was extremely hard to overcome it took me a little while to figure it out and that was actually trying to make a game. I say this was the hardest part because I had to do so much research and program so much of the game that I nearly drove myself mad from typing so much and testing so much. Though I felt rewarded once I had finished it. What was the reward? Actually finishing the game.
In the future, I will be able to apply this information to help me make more games and possibly even find a job working at a game design firm as I will have had a background in game design. From this information I learned a few skills. These skills are, programming, designing of a level for a game and being able to conduct a playtest session.
